After collecting the campers from Leith Cove, we sailed across the mouth of Andvord Bay and into the breathtaking Errera Channel for a morning landing at Danco Island. Under brilliant sunshine, the scene that greeted us was classic Antarctica—a busy beach full of Gentoo Penguins, some trudging up well-worn penguin highways to their colonies, others resting or moulting along the shoreline. Just offshore, nature offered a more dramatic moment. Three Leopard Seals patrolled the shallows, and several penguins fell victim in a powerful reminder of the wild and unforgiving balance of life here.
Guests hiked up to a viewpoint above the penguin colonies for panoramic views of the bay, and as on many days, some others joined the kayaking excursion or spent time in the science boat, exploring the surroundings from a different perspective.
In the afternoon, excitement continued as two bull Orcas were sighted—then again later in the evening—while sailing north through the glassy waters of the Gerlache Strait. All around, Humpback Whales surfaced and fluked in every direction, offering one of the most memorable whale-watching moments of the voyage.
