Our first day in the Drake Passage brought with it the familiar roll of the Southern Ocean. The movement was enough to send a few guests in search of seasickness medication, but spirits remained high as we settled into life at sea. Out on deck, those keeping watch were rewarded with sightings of several albatross species and a variety of seabirds, their graceful flight offering a welcome distraction from the motion below. In the afternoon, a lecture introduced the birdlife we might encounter during our time in Antarctica.
Throughout the day, guests received briefings about the excursions and activities planned for the voyage. There was also an introduction to the Science Centre and the citizen science projects available for anyone interested in contributing to research efforts during the journey.
In the early evening, the Captain officially welcomed us in the Explorer Lounge and introduced some of the ship’s officers. The Expedition Team also took the stage to introduce themselves—a sturdy and enthusiastic group who will be guiding us through this extraordinary part of the world.
