The weather was kind to us as we cruised the beautiful Hercules Bay, whose cliffs shelter colonies of South Georgian wildlife. This enabled us all to enjoy the wonderful macaroni penguins, named after the outrageous headgear of 18th century wealthy British 'dandies'. In the afternoon we visited the only accessible whaling station in South Georgia, Grytviken. It is a fascinating place and an excellent snapshot of the grisly business of whaling in the first half of the 20th century. The interesting museum enhanced our guests' knowledge of the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who is buried in the cemetery there. Some guests enjoyed the Maiviken hike - a walk across the hills toward the next bay. This was a walk taken by whalers when they had free time on Sundays. That evening we experienced the momentous occasion of a blue whale sighting. It was really close to the ship!
