Today we sailed toward the South Orkney Islands and our first Antarctic stop at Signy Island, a tiny British scientific research base. The opportunity to experience this small corner of Antarctica in the South Orkneys is not normally given to tourist vessels, but since MS Fram and HX support many scientists from different research bases and universities, the privilege was ours to enjoy. It was a fascinating insight into base life in this remote and isolated place where only about seven people work. The afternoon was spent at sea with various lectures and workshops, and the evening included a quiz where we learned some fascinating and often-surprising facts about members of the Expedition Team. The highlight at the end of the day was the HX Charity Auction where some great items were put up for sale to raise funds for HX Foundation.
