Kvitøya is one of those places that always has bears in the summer, so landing is almost always impossible. We could already see a bear sleeping close to the shoreline, so we opted for a zodiac cruising.
The conditions were choppy but improved gradually as we started the cruising. We headed over to see the sleeping bear a bit closer, which didn't even stir as we approached. We decided to explore the bay further east, where the monument to Andree's expedition was erected. We passed by a colony of female and calf walruses at a safe distance of more than 300m, but we could still enjoy the sight, noise, and smell of them.
In the other bay, we came across another three bears, one of which was walking close to the shoreline. It was a thrill for everyone to see without the need of binoculars. In the evening, we cruised passed the impressive Bråsvellbreen glacier.
