Deception Island in the Antarctic South Shetlands was our final landing of this half of the voyage. The low cloud and distant mist lent an eerie atmosphere to this lunar-like landscape. However many of us were distracted by the cheeky young fur seals as we walked along the beach or roamed around the remains of this early 20th century whaling station. In a talk later in the day Jane shared with us some details of the whaling industry in the southern hemisphere and introduced us to a life size fabric 'newborn' humpback calf. Rudolf gave a talk on Protecting Antarctica which was very timely in view of where we had spent the morning. This afternoon we turned our bow towards the north and headed towards Cape Horn.
